When it comes to uncovering our own BS, many of us rely on similar patterns to protect ourselves. The implied loss of esteem and social position that causes embarrassment is a powerful force on us, enough to make us lie to reduce the impact on our social position.
A compulsive liar tells their mistruths even when telling the truth would be easier and better. When people hear a bold-faced lie they are resentful that the liar would be so belittling of their time and intelligence.

Likewise if you are a manager, praise your people for telling the truth and they will lie and cover up less. But defending yourself with deceptions or false portrayals of who you are will drive you further from your goals and will likely prevent you from getting what you want in life.

The present tense is relatively easy: "lay" requires an object (you lay a book on the table), and "lie" doesn't (you lie on the sofa).
The past tense and participles get so confusing though that we made a chart! Understanding the different types of lies can go a long way in recognizing the issues that the liar is going through- whether it be you or a friend.

Another way we tell lies is more directly in helping others avoid trouble, for example when we give them an alibi, saying they were with us rather than in some other compromising situation. At the most extreme, we might even commit perjury, lying.
